Classes and Events

Join us for a class, event, or workshop in our Queens, New York sewing studio. We have something for everyone. Don't see something you like? We also offer private sewing lessons in sewing, embroidery, quilting, garment sewing, and more. Call us at 718-468-5858 for more details or request a class!

You are unique -- now you can learn how to design and create your own messenger bag -- with your unique flair! Using basic machine stitches -- straight stitch and zig-zag -- you will machine applique onto the large flap cover of your messenger bag. This can be ANY design you'd like! All fabrics and materials are provided for you -- just bring your ideas. Prerequisite -- Machine Basics 101. Plan to use one of Sew Right's Machines.

You will be creating a modern beginner friendly quilt that packs a lot of punch! The technique involved in this skill building class is learning how to use your rotary cutter and ruler to create quilt blocks. We will create a quilt top, learn pin basting, and discuss basic machine quilting. This is a great class for any quilting skill level. No prerequisites are required!

Do you own a sewing a machine or are considering purchasing one? This class is a great way to start! You will learn the basic operation of a sewing machine which includes: a review of the parts, how to properly thread the machine, and how to wind a bobbin. Once the machine is correctly threaded, there will be some basic skill building. You will learn how to sew a straight seam, learn how to pivot a corner, and how to sew a gentle curve. We will be providing the machines for this class. If you have questions regarding something you may already own, the staff at the store will be happy to set up a private lesson to discuss this with you. All materials will be included.

Do you love a good all-purpose, carry - all bag? Do you have denim jeans that are no longer wearable, but don't want to just toss them? Upcycle those jeans into a useful and interesting-looking bag! You'll stitch patches of jeans together to create a one of a kind bag.

Start the new year with a fresh set of napkins! Reduce your environmental footprint while enhancing your table setting! These napkins (2 styles and sizes) are not only durable, they are much softer on your face than those disposable paper napkins! Learn cutting, measuring, pressing (which is different than ironing!) techniques as well as how to create perfect mitered corners! I have lots of tips and tricks to show you -- come learn with Laurie Alice!

Would you like to learn how to alter your own clothes? In this 3-hour workshop, we will explore the various techniques to take in pants and skirts. You will learn the proper way to pin your garment and then how to transfer the markings to stitch the new seams. We will discuss the best approach on how to alter your garment based on how it is made including how to take in waistbands, darts, inseams and side seams.

In this class you will learn how to do the classic jean hem using your sewing machine.

Are you ready to take your sewing to the next level while having more time to sew? Welcome to our new all day Saturday garment sewing workshop for advanced beginner and intermediate sewists! Learn what you want to learn by getting the specific help that you need with your project(s). Bring in all materials needed for your project(s) as you must work from a commercial pattern. Since this is an all day class, we will take a break between 1:30 - 2:00. Pack a lunch or grab a bite nearby! To take this class you must have made at least one garment already. Are you new to sewing? Just like making cool things? Sign up now to make this simple drawstring bag from start to finish! Designed to be carried on your back, it is the perfect size for your lunch, books, a pair of shoes, or your favorite plushy! Knowing how to measure and cut fabric is crucial to successful projects - I'll show you how to do this accurately, and safely! You will practice how to sew straight seams, back stitch, pivot corners, make a casing for the ribbon, thread a drawstring closure using a safety pin, as well as applying a patch pocket and top stitchng.

Take your sewing skills to the next level with this hands-on introduction to patternmaking. This course will guide you through the process of developing a custom skirt pattern using your own body measurements.

The paper pieced forest is a two day workshop on learning the technique of paper pieced foundation. You will make 4 styles of trees using the precise techniques that paper piecing offers. Laurie will show you two possible techniques to create your trees. The first method will have you sewing through the paper foundation. The second method will have you using the template repeatedly without the need to pull out the paper. You will create several trees that can be incorporated into a table runner, jacket back or a quilt! So many possibilities! Do you want to spend a few hours with quilters who would like to have fun with scrappy strips to make a simple but exciting quilt top.  Judy envisions a class that utilizes one’s own fabric and encourages you to share fabrics with others to have an unexpected outcome.  This class can appeal to everyone from beginners to experts.

CLASS POLICY

Our classes and events require planning and preparation and often includes ordering materials and supplies, scheduling staff and teachers, and allocating space which is contingent on the total number of students who register for a class. When students request cancellations or reschedule at the last minute, it affects all of the above in addition to taking away a spot from someone who wanted to take the class.

In fairness to all of our customers we are unable to make exceptions to our policy, including for reasons of illness, travel, or work. If you are unable to attend a class at the last minute, consider offering the spot to a friend!

If Sew Right Sewing Machines cancels a class for any reason, you will receive a FULL refund.

If you cancel 14 days or more before the date of your class, you will receive full credit towards another class within 6 months of the original class date. If you cancel a rescheduled class, you will forfeit your payment for that class.

If you cancel 2-13 days before the date of your class, you will receive a full credit to use towards another class within 3 months of the original class date. If you cancel a rescheduled class, you will forfeit your payment for that class.

If you do not cancel your class within 48 hours of the class start date and time OR you do not show up, you will forfeit your payment for that class.

If you register for an event or class with a guest educator, your class fee is nonrefundable.

If you register for a private lesson, your class fee is nonrefundable.

Payment is required in full upon registration of the class you would like to attend. You can register online at sewright.com, in-person at the store, or by calling the store at 718.468.5858.
